Within the service, IT is managed by the Directorate of Information, which also provides other information services, and operational support in policing, in areas ranging from surveillance to computer forensics. The Directorate's 850 staff also manage IT systems that demand a level of security that prevents the use of outsourcing.

Ms Beaton, who originally trained as an accountant, has been at the MPS for 11 years. Previously, she worked at ICL, PA Consulting, and GE.
