The decision to introduce a business process mapping initiative may come from either the business or the IT department. The key to successful business process mapping (BPM) is to understand what an organisation does and how existing ways of working could be improved.

In practice, this could range from finding ways to cut costs by streamlining operations to revamp IT support services to support expansion or dismantling organisational silos to ensure personnel work more efficiently.

No matter who drives the project initially, responsibility for it will more than likely sit with IT professionals. The reason for this is they tend to have a broad-based view of how the organisation operates and how processes fit together.
