What can a young person with ambitions of working in applications development do to get a head start in their future career?

Today, skilled software developers are among the UK’s most in-demand IT professionals. The talents they have to offer are highly prized by employers and that situation isn’t likely to change any time soon: research from e-skills UK suggests that, by 2019, the UK will need an additional 67,800 software professionals.

Some of them will work in developing new software applications for companies. Some will be building the latest computer games. Some will work in web development and some in bringing new mobile apps to market. One of the best things about software development, say practitioners, is the variety of work open to those with good programming skills.

So what can a young person with ambitions to be a software developer do to get their foot on the ladder? More specifically, what programming languages might they need to learn?
