Learn more to earn more

e-skills UK’s latest Bulletin, the definitive source of information about the demand and supply of ICT labour and skills in the UK, shows that IT salaries are up approximately 1% overall. But increases are greatest among more highly qualified staff.

Actual earnings for IT&T staff increased slightly during the final quarter of last year and at £38,500 pa the average salary of full-time IT&T staff was well above the UK average of £28,000 pa.

However, the report reveals that salary increases were not equal across the board.

IT professionals in lower level jobs saw a decline in overall average earnings, while more highly skilled staff, such as software professionals, IT&T managers and strategy and planning staff, took the lion’s share of the uplift.

With employer demand for more highly skilled staff increasing, the key to improving earning potential and general marketability would appear to be to gaining higher-level skills, but doing so often requires a substantial investment of time and money in education and training.
