Top 10 IT skills demanded by employers

Improving your skills will make you a more valuable employee. If you’re thinking of investing in some training to improve your value to your current or potential employers, it helps to know what skills employers are looking for. Interestingly, these haven’t changed in the last few years, so you can be pretty confident that people with these skills are in demand.

Research recently published by e-skills UK revealed that the top 10 skills needed by permanent staff are:

  • SQL
  • C
  • C#
  • .NET
  • SQL SVR
  • ASP
  • Java
  • Java Script
  • HTML
  • Linux

The skills required by contract staff, who are often brought in because of their expertise in a particular area, are only slightly different:

Other skills worth considering are: Embedded, AS400, OSPF and SAP, all of which have been growing in popularity with recruiters of permanent IT&T staff over the past year and the same is true of C/Loadrunner within the contract market.

Jobs in design and development continue to be the primary roles sought by employers, accounting for around 60% of all permanent positions and 70% of contract posts – making it an prudent area of development/up-dating of associated skill sets for people working in IT&T planning to move up the career ladder.
