IT companies taking new approach to recruiting developers

Small IT businesses are using apprenticeships for the first time to recruit and train new web and software developers.

The IT Professional Apprenticeship programme, developed by e-skills UK, provides employers with a framework to train apprentices with a blend of practical skills, knowledge and experience. Employers can create apprenticeship programmes that are tailored to their specific needs, and with public subsidies available to assist with training costs, apprenticeships can offer a very attractive option to employers looking to take on new staff.

Three small companies have been working with e-skills UK to develop apprenticeship programmes in the areas of web and software development. At those companies, apprentices are involved in a range of projects including developing applications for mobile phones, creating business systems for investment banks, and building websites.

Nine apprentices recently started at ScrumIT, a software development business which specialises in mobile and embedded applications. Mel Pullen from ScrumIT is positive that, by learning through practical experience, his group of young people will soon become confident and valuable IT professionals. Pullen believes the apprenticeship programme will help create a skilled, loyal workforce.

Strategic Systems Solutions is an IT consultancy and outsourcing business with a particular focus on the financial services sector. Their 20 apprentices have been trained to meet specific client skills gaps in application development for mainframe computers. For SSS, the flexibility of the apprenticeship framework to develop apprentices with the skills required by clients is central to its appeal.

Software development company Atlas Computer Systems designs and develops websites and software applications. Established in 2006 and originally operating out of a garden shed, the company now has a workforce of seven – including three apprentices. For Atlas, apprentices are a highly practical and cost effective solution to building the business.

e-skills UK is helping to make apprenticeships for software developers more widely available. If you are an employer interested in hiring an apprentice, email apprenticeships@e-skills.com
