Cloud computing is set for lift-off

Businesses of all shapes and sizes are increasingly looking at cloud computing, with more firms than ever before after simple and direct access to data and applications.

IBM’s global study of 3,000 chief information officers (CIOs) around the world showed there was a dramatic increase in interest when it came to cloud technologies in the past year.

It found that 60 per cent of organisations were willing to embrace cloud computing in the next five years, double the figure from the same survey last year. Media, entertainment, automotive and telecommunication companies were particularly keen.

The study also revealed that 83 per cent of CIOs see business intelligence and analytic technology as a top priority, allowing them to make use of the huge amounts of data now available. And 74 per cent of CIOs saw mobile computing technologies as a game changer, up from 68 per cent in last year.

“This study provides key evidence of how the capabilities of IT are aligning perfectly with the aspirations of business leaders,” said Jeanette Horan, vice president and chief information officer at IBM.

“The winners will be those companies that understand the power of technologies like cloud, analytics and mobility, and can harness that power to transform their businesses."

She said of cloud computing, “It’s a way to efficiently manage infrastructure, to be able to deploy any application to any user in a very self-service way.”
